The History of the Phrase “June Bride”
The phrase “June Bride” derives from the 1500’s, when bathing was a much more occasional ritual. Most people would bathe about once a month, and hardly or not at all in the winter. When spring came around, the English commoners’ “annual bath” would take place in May.
Weddings would take place in June while the bath was still considered recent.
Even with the “recent” bath (about one month prior to the wedding), brides would carry fragrant bouquets of flowers to hide their body odor, which is where the tradition of carrying flowers comes from.
